Table Read -podcast-

Article by Miguel Sagaz —

A recording studio dressed in Halloween paraphernalia served as the perfect setting to experience the recording of the latest episode of Table Read, a new podcast concept by Jack Levy, Mark Knell, and Shawn Sharma. On this occasion, I got to go behind the scenes of the live recording of “Landlord” featuring Dominique Mouton and Cynthia Rodriguez.

Having been trained in the Theatre, I recognize that the excitement and adrenaline experienced during a live performance can be hard to replicate, especially on a podcast. However, Table Read -podcast- offers this thrill to anyone and everyone who is looking to be entertained.

Imagine a group of actors immersed in new material, working with incredible directors and supported by editors who bring their magic touch to the final product. That is exactly what Table Read offers. A raw, and theatrical approach to new and unreleased scripts.

In the company’s own words “Each installment of Table Read delivers a brand new, never-before-heard script from established industry giants and up-and-coming rising stars, directed by those who have directed OSCAR and EMMY winners and supported by a talented cast and crew of working actors, award-winning engineers, seasoned directors and Hollywood professionals”.

“It’s a space to play. You can experiment, have fun, and if you get it wrong, you can go back and do it again”.

Jack Levy.

My experience in the recording studio, although brief, allowed me to experience how the magic happens. Usually when you get to be at a table read, you have already gotten the job, so there is a certain pressure to deliver, but in Jack Levy’s words “It’s a space to play. You can experiment, have fun, and if you get it wrong, you can go back and do it again”, which makes it a safe space for actors.

“Landlord” took a life of its own with the talented group of actors including Alan Rosenberg, known for LA Law, and Bosch, as well as his three-year presidency of SAG-AFTRA. Also in the studio, Tom Holland, known for Child’s Play (Chucky), served as guest director.

Needless to say, the people who bring these stories to life know their craft, enjoy the process and work together to create an experience that will inspire younger and older generations alike.

Throughout the current SAG-AFTRA strike, something has become very clear to me. The passion and deep love for the work is something that all artists share, and it was palpable during the recording. Actors who are in a room, ready to play. Play! something that as adults we seem to have forgotten how to do, or at least feel free enough to do it.

I encourage everyone to listen to Table Read -podcast-, get immersed in the story, and treat yourself to a spooky Halloween episode this year.
