The Chap

Los Angeles has a new Brit in town. And judging by its elevated aesthetic, outstanding drinks, and friendly staff, The Chap is here to stay. Named after the iconic London-born Charlie Chaplin, this pub pays homage to the century-old public houses from Soho, Hampstead, and Spitalfields, to the English countryside towns of Surrey and Richmond.

When I received notice that the opening of The Chap, would be November 19th, I quickly set up my calendar, blocking that date.

Saturday night comes along, press ID in hand, and my friend Mark by my side. Only to find that the inauguration party had been the previous night.

After feeling slightly disappointed, but especially confused about how I had completely messed up the dates, we didn’t let this hiccup change the mood and ventured inside for a British-inspired evening.

Having experienced London many times, and being familiar with the pub scene, my expectations were high. So I was happy to realize that The Chap delivers in many ways and for many reasons.

Kellyann Foster, a host at The Chap was kind enough to give us a little tour of the space. There is a section referred to as the garden, (even though its interior) that connects to the more intimate areas of the pub.

After recommending some items from the menu, (Fish & Chips included), we sat down at a high table by the bar.

No surprise that The Chap is part of the Ten Five hospitality group, known for creating spaces with meticulous attention to detail while maintaining a casual vibe.

Daniel Federico Torres is the head bartender at The Chap. He came up with a variety of promising drinks that will entice even the most avid connoisseur. And who better than Daniel himself to recommend a drink to start off our night?

The Comfortably Numb, (originally with tequila) in my case with Mezcal, is a delicious blend of smoky pineapple, bell pepper, and habanero, balanced to perfection. A drink that I will return to over and over again. According to my friend Mark, The Bloody Mary martini is also worth a try, perfect for a Sunday brunch.

Torres’s inspiration for the drink menu is “All things England, but with a Los Angeles flair. You will see touchstones like the Bramble and Espresso Martini, while also including Agave cocktails which are highly coveted in California”.

Paying homage to England and Los Angeles is something that seems to run in the DNA of this place. Blending the best of both worlds prove to be a smart concept in the ever-changing pub landscape.

And because I am known to have a sweet tooth, we couldn’t leave without trying Daniel Zarate’s (General Manager) recommendation of the Sticky Toffee Pudding (without a doubt the star of the show). A must-have, and hopefully a staple of The Chap, who no doubt will soon become a neighborhood favorite.
